Colored Pencil Drawing as Fine Art
Any medium can be used to create fine art — even colored pencil drawings. Fine art is defined by the skill and accomplishment of a piece and not the materials it is made of. With a few colored pencils, paper, an eraser, a sharpener and a graphite pencil, any artist can create a masterpiece of a colored pencil drawing. One could argue that a true master of their art can get by with even less.
Colored pencils offer the familiarity of a graphite pencil drawing with an unlimited range of color shading options. The process is no different than creating any other composition.
Start With the Base
Begin your composition with a pencil drawing. This will be the outline you’ll use to flesh out a full image. Take your time, and draw with light lines. This is only meant to be a guide, and much of it will not appear above your final layers. Any accidental smudges and lines outside of the main drawing can be erased.
Block out the Composition
Use your pencil outlining to block out key shapes and tones. During this step, you should take the time to organize the composition flow. Sometimes an accidental shape makes its way into the final design. Only use the graphite pencil to flesh out shades and tones.
Add Color and Layer
Start filling in the colors of the drawing. Select a primary color theme and set aside the pencils you need. Draw over the graphite shadings. A good colored pencil will blend well. Keep at it until the main imagery is fleshed out.
Use a Complementary Color
Refine your piece a bit more by finding a creative way to use the complementary color to your main color choice. Just take a look at the color wheel and find the color on the opposite side of your main color. For example if you chose yellow as the main color, try blending in purple.
Keep at it, and soon you’ll have a colored pencil work of art.
